Understanding ERCP
What Is an ERCP?
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a special procedure used to examine and treat problems in your bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreatic ducts.
During ERCP, your doctor uses a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope, which is gently passed through your mouth into your stomach and the first part of your small intestine (the duodenum). Through the endoscope, a small catheter is inserted to inject dye into the bile and pancreatic ducts. X-rays are then taken to see detailed images and guide any necessary treatments.
Why Do I Need an ERCP?
Your doctor may recommend an ERCP to:
-
Find and remove gallstones stuck in the bile ducts.
-
Place stents to open narrowed or blocked ducts.
-
Take biopsies (small tissue samples) to check for cancer or other diseases.
-
Drain blocked areas or treat infections.
-
Investigate causes of jaundice (yellowing of the skin), pancreatitis, or unexplained abdominal pain.
