Understanding Your Colonoscopy
What Is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your large intestine (colon and rectum)using a long, flexible tube called a colonoscope. The colonoscope has a tiny camera and a light at the tip, which sends images to a monitor so your doctor can look for any abnormalities.
Colonoscopy is an important test for detecting polyps, inflammation, bleeding, cancer, and other conditions affecting the colon.
Why Do I Need a Colonoscopy?
Your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy if you:
-
Have symptoms such as bleeding, abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, or unexplained weight loss.
-
Need colon cancer screening
-
Have a personal or family history of colon polyps or cancer.
-
Require surveillance for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
